Charles Spurgeon wrote the following.
— “What a secret thing the sap is! The roots go searching through the soil with their little spongioles, but we cannot see them suck out the various gases, or transmute the mineral into the vegetable; this work is done down in the dark. Our root is Christ Jesus, an d our life is hid in Him; this is the secret of the Lord. The radix of the Christian life is as secret as the life itself. How permanently active is the sap in the cedar! In the Christian the divine life is always full of energy – not always in fruit-bearing, but in inward operations.
The believer’s graces, are not every one of them in constant motion? but his life never ceases to palpitate within. He is not always working for God, but his heart is always living upon Him. As the sap manifests itself in producing the foliage and fruit of the tree, so with a truly healthy Christian, his grace is externally manifested in his walk and conversation. If you talk with him, he cannot help speaking about Jesus. If you notice his actions you will see that he has been with Jesus. He has so much sap within, that it must fill his conduct and conversation with life.” —
I write, My prayer today. Lord, let there not be plentiful foliage and a lack of fruit.
I would rather have the fruit of the Spirit in my life than to be a pretty looking tree.
Let me consider this carefully. Let the Fruit of the Spirit be grown in me!
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-25
Leaves alone cannot nourish the souls that need to know you. Ecclesiastical practices and religious activity cannot bring about the best spiritual outcomes.
Help me decrease the foliage, if it means, sitting in the winter collecting, your living waters within. Let me sit at your feet rather than being found in the much doing. If there is no fruit growing yet in me.
For I desire to grow deep the roots that no one sees. The ones I grow in you, my Lord. I want to be found going deeper in to the river with you.
Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side. And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins. Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over. And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river. Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other. Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed. And it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh. And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from En-gedi even unto En-eglaim; they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many.
Ezekiel 47:1-10
Deeper in you Lord. Deeper in the waters with you. For in your presence I will become useful and my reach will become greater.
For you are the vine and I am but a branch. You are the Life that lives in me and is able to shine brighter and farther.
Your River, Your line, You stretch before me, the places and the distance. How far I am able to go, is your design and your choice.
I read it clearly. Jesus, I know it well.
“Come, follow Me,” … “and I will make you fishers of men.”
Mathew 4:19
You extend the line of my influence. You extend the cord of your grace.
In your presence, I will find the depth of mercy and the bountiful joy of fellowship.
In Christ alone, My worth is found. My Purpose is Clear in you.
For in your drawing me closer, I have come to the edge of the river. In following you I have jumped in. I believing and trusting in you, you have shed your flow that has cleansed me of all of my sin.
You have made me a co-heir with you and a colaborer too.
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
John 7:38
Now, that flow, of your mercy and love is found in me and through me you can do as you will.
Jesus, you are the River of Life. You are the Tree of Life. You are the fruit that when eaten can become the sustenance of the soul.
The thirst of the weary can be quenched in you. The mercy and forgiveness is only found in the cross that you hung on and bled. The resurrection power to this newness of life can only be encountered and experienced in coming to you.
Oh, let me draw in deep. Let me swim deeper still, that your truth would flow freely in me and reach other souls as many, as you lead.
My heart is at best, humbled before you. For in you each soul finds rest. Each life is given direction and clear perspective.
Apart from you I can do nothing.
Let me not be as the fig tree, that when you sought to find fruit there, you found none.
Let me be full of fruit in due time. Brining in the sheaves and not coming empty handed.
Help me to dive deep in your presence. Let the waters rise far above my head.
It is in the depth of you that I have found my own salvation. And my supplications you have heard.
My weeping has not been in vain. For you have allowed the line to stretch further. You have been the one who guided me in.
Let me be found in you, My Lord.
I want to come into the depth of the river and be one whom you use.
I want to hear ypu say to me, throw in the nets. Draw in the nets. The catch is plenty, the nets are full.
Yes, draw me ever deeper in you.
Let my motto be…
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:15
That every soul may know you, Use me.
Draw them near.
